- Nandi Hills is nestled in a highland area of lush green rolling hills at the edge of the Great Rift Valley in the southwestern part of Kenya, Africa.
- The region’s tropical climate, high-altitudes [6,716 ft (2,047 m)], and volcanic soil create an ideal environment for tea cultivation.

- Purple tea is a rare and unique cultivar grown in the highlands of the Rift Valley, specifically in Nandi Hills, Kenya.
- The development of purple tea cultivar TRFK306, began in the early 20th century. Scottish-born Arnold Butler McDonell, who purchased land in Kenya from the British government, received Camellia sinensis seedlings from India in 1918, which thrived in the mountainous environment.
- Today, small-scale tea farmers in Nandi Hills cultivate purple tea without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Unique and Ideal growing conditions , including rich volcanic soil, intense sun, and low oxygen, contribute to the robustness of the purple tea bushes. Though the growth of purple tea is relative slower than other tea cultivars, its robustness allow its leaves to be harvested year-round.
